Jim Holyoak was born in Michigan, grew up in coastal British Columbia, and is currently based in Montréal. His discipline is comprised of drawing-installations and book-works, exploring the bridges and boundaries between perception and fantasy, deep time and the present, humans and other animals. He received a BFA from the University of Victoria, an MFA from Concordia University, and studied as an apprentice to master ink-painter Shen Ling Xiang, in Yangshuo, China. He has attended artist residencies in New York, Banff, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, and throughout Norway. Holyoak has participated in exhibitions across North America and Europe, most recently at Tegnerforbundet (Drawing Association) in Oslo. In 2011, his work was exhibited in the Québec Triennial at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and in 2013 at the "Yes, Naturally" exhibition at the GEM Museum of Contemporary Art in The Hague. He was the 2014 recipient of The William Blair Bruce European Fine Art Travel Fellowship, from Gotland, Sweden. He is represented by bG Gallery in Los Angeles, and by Galerie Donald Browne in Montréal.
