As part of our Artist-in-Construction Residency program, Art-in-Buildings has hosted four artists in residence over the past two years: Noa Charuvi, Hugo Bastidas, Paul Anthony Smith, and Bahar Behbahani. We invited the artists to consider and respond to the development of 50 West, a luxury residential tower rising in Lower Manhattan. The building, designed by Helmut Jann, will be a spectacular addition to the skyline when finished but, rather than just anticipate completion, we were interested in the construction process: the seemingly impossible ballet of workers and machinery that is usually hidden behind construction fences. We gave each artist a hard hat and access to the site so that they could see first hand the work being done, and use that experience in the studio.
