Sara Jimenez: The Scenery is Never Monotonous

Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings is pleased to announce the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window: Sara Jimenez, The Scenery is Never Monotonous.

Sara Jimenez’s practice examines transcultural narratives and histories of place, environment, and lineage. Drawing on her Filipinx-Canadian background, Jimenez often incorporates visual imagery documenting American colonialism in the Philippines into her work, reconstructing historical photographs into hanging vines and flora. In the West 10th Window, a lush jungle pushes against the glass walls, overgrown and expanding beyond the confines of the space. Composed of painted newspapers, magazines, and fabric, Jimenez’s jungle is modeled after plants invasive to New York that were brought to the US in the late 1800s-early 1900s as ornamental plants. The bright red and painted patterns imitate aposematism, the naturally occurring colors and patterns animals use to signal that they are a threat. Pushing out from the contained space, the originally decorative plants take on a wild and toxic nature. During the exhibition’s run, Jimenez will activate the window space with a single performance. In this unannounced presentation, she will take on the characteristics of a predator emerging from the overgrowth, crouched inside the three by three-foot window box and camouflaged by the red tinted panes and dense jungle scenery. Seen by some passersby while others remain oblivious to the hidden threat, the performance contemplates the nature of invasive species, animals, and peoples.

Sara Jimenez is a Filipinx-Canadian interdisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Jimenez received her BA from the University of Toronto (2008) and her MFA from Parsons the New School for Design (2013). Residencies include Brooklyn Art Space (2014), Wave Hill’s Winter Workspace (2015), a full artist fellowship to The Vermont Studio Center (2016), the Bronx Museum’s AIM program (2016), Yaddo (2018) and BRICworkspace (2018). Jimenez has exhibited at the Pinto Art Museum (Philippines), El Museo del Barrio, Rush Arts Gallery, BRIC Gallery, BronxArtSpace, FiveMyles Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, Smack Mellon and Wayfarers Gallery, among others. She has performed numerous venues including The Noguchi Museum, Jack, The Glasshouse, and Dixon Place. Currently, she teaches at Parsons the New School for Design and BMCC, and is an Art Practice Mentor at SVA.
