How is space experienced? Consciousness of Space includes twelve carved wood sculptures made out of cherry or walnut wood, some with a smooth surface, others roughly chiseled or painted in bright colors. All of the sculptures are assembled of several single parts. They look strong and stationary but are delicate in their final construction. Executed over a period of ten years, Hirofumi Maeshiba continues to explore his relationship between body and spirit and to investigate his primary question:"How to create the surrounding?"
Hirofumi Maeshiba: Consciousness of Space is curated by Elisabeth Akkerman and is sponsored by the Time Equities Inc. (TEI) Art-in-Buildings Program. TEI is committed to enriching the experience of our properties through the Art-in-Buildings Program, an innovative approach that brings contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists to non-traditional exhibition spaces in the interest of promoting artists, expanding the audience for art, and creating a more interesting environment for our building occupants, residents, and their guests.
