Greg Smith makes videos and objects. The videos pivot around mechanisms and hand-made devices, equal parts precise engineering and haphazard artifice. They are built, used, dismantled, re-purposed, or forgotten in front of the camera. The objects argue for themselves, but their overriding purpose and that of Smith’s project is to better understand the nature of video: what it can (and can’t) do, how it lives in a setting, and how it mediates performance.
