Heather Cox’s Clipped is a site-specific installation made entirely of fingernail clippers. The project is an iteration of an ongoing body of work by Cox, entitled Clipper Project. In her work, Cox repurposes simple, overlooked objects – such as aspirin, pins, and erasers – as surrogates for the minutia of everyday life. The clippers in particular evoke strong memory and sense associations; it’s hard to look at them without imagining their use and hearing their quick, sharp sound. The garland of clippers strung together in the West 10th Window catches flashes of sunlight and casts elaborate shadows, giving this benign, everyday object an unusual new life.
