Charlotte Becket: Flood

Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings is pleased to announce the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window Satellite Space: Charlotte Becket, Flood.

Flood, a new site-specific installation by Charlotte Becket, continues the artist’s interest in kinetic sculpture, but departs from the monotone black palettes of her earlier work. Presenting her first multi-colored sculpture in the series, Becket creates layers of red to yellow ombré with swirling metallic blue lines. Undulating in the 523 Hudson Street window space, the shifting colors and patterns of the sculpture recall a moving body of water reflecting light across its surface. Becket sees this tension at the surface as a boundary that “separates the conscious and unconscious mind.”

The location of the window space and its proximity to the Hudson River inspired Becket to create this new work. She describes the building as carrying “an awareness of the forces of water.” By inserting a water-like form within the window space, Becket alludes to the global crisis of rising water levels, and to the symbolic overflow of social and political activity in the neighborhood.

Charlotte Becket lives and works in New York City where she is an Associate Professor at Pace University. She attended Hunter College’s MFA program. Solo and two person exhibitions include LaMama Galleria, New York City, Valentine Gallery NY, Crisp Gallery in London, LEAP in Berlin, Taxter and Spengemann in New York City as well as group exhibitions at Gazelli Art House in London, Gasser and Grunert, Anna Kustera, NY Studio Gallery, Passerby and the Invitational Exhibition Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City. She is the recipient of grants from The New York Foundation for the Arts, Socrates Sculpture Park, The Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Tony Smith Foundation, the Verizon Foundation, and the Center for Book Arts.
