50 West is a stunning new addition to the downtown Manhattan skyline, blending breathtaking architecture designed by world-renowned architect Helmut Jahn with awe-inspiring interiors envisioned by Thomas Juul-Hansen.
As part of our Artist-in-Construction Residency program, Art-in-Buildings has hosted four artists in residence between 2014-2016, during the construction of 50 West: Noa Charuvi, Hugo Bastidas, Paul Anthony Smith, and Bahar Behbahani. We invited the artists to consider and respond to the development of 50 West, a luxury residential tower rising in Lower Manhattan. We were interested in the construction process: the seemingly impossible ballet of workers and machinery that is usually hidden behind construction fences. We gave each artist a hard hat and access to the site so that they could see firsthand the work being done, and use that experience in the studio. Works created through the Artist-in-Construction-Residency are now on view throughout 50 West Street, along with work by over 50 other talented artists.
The 50 West Art Program includes nearly 100 works of art installed throughout the building. Featured artists include Alice Aycock, Hugo Bastidas, Bahar Behbahani, Claus Brunsmann, Noa Charuvi, Max Cole, Kinga Czerska, Erika DeVries, Margaret Evangeline, Jonathan Isherwood, Alain Kirili, Ron Klein, Tadaaki Kuwayama, Atta Kwami, Emily Noelle Lambert, Joan Linder, Sally Morales, Robert Morgan, John Morra, Stephen Mueller, Rakuko Naito, Tom Nicol, Caris Reid, Lauren Seiden, Sandi Slone, Paul Anthony Smith, and Yurkio Yamaguchi.
