Pamela Council’s Blaxidermy Venus explores the idea of a higher order of beauty by referencing motifs of love goddesses and using tools of modern beauty such as acrylic fake fingernails, plastic hair beads, marble contact paper, tennis balls, rubber from sneakers, and nail polish. Council’s intricate sculpture uses contemporary readymade materials to create an abstract seascape. Blaxidermy Venus allows us to challenge ideas of modern beauty by repossessing mass-produced, familiar beauty objects as sculpture, challenging their associations and power. The subject is apt for this storefront exhibition space; our neighbors include beauty and fashion boutiques, all of which display their products as one would expect to see them.
