Jeff DeGolier: Jeff Degolier: (If This is Paradise) I wish I had a Lawnmower

Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings is pleased to announce the newest exhibition at the West 10th Window: Jeff DeGolier, (If This is Paradise) I wish I had a Lawnmower.

In (If This is Paradise) I wish I had a Lawnmower at the West 10th Window, Jeff DeGolier installed a large photographic detail/collage of Time Landscape, an earthwork realized by Alan Sonfist in 1978 that recreates a small chunk of land in downtown Manhattan to its pre-colonial condition. Set onto a vibrating panel, the calming and hopeful image of flowers and greenery begins to blur, as though shaken by a jackhammer or rumbling traffic. Behind the vibrating photograph, DeGolier installed a small black & white CRT monitor which continuously streams an instructional video on how to grow a plant in a car. Inside the window, wires and plugs are left exposed, and DeGolier’s juxtaposition of preserved natural landscape with the often aggressive modernity that now inhabits lower Manhattan is disarming, creating an anachronistic display of the dichotomy between what is commonly thought of as the natural world and humanity’s tireless search for absolute comfort via machinery, electronics, and architecture.

Jeff DeGolier was born in Bellingham, WA. He received his BFA in Photography and Ceramic Art from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1999 and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2004.
