Claudia Chaseling: mutopia 2

Time Equities Inc. Art-in-Buildings and 310W are pleased to announce a new site-specific artwork at 310 West Wisconsin Ave: Claudia Chaseling, mutopia 2. This is Chaseling’s first permanent spatial painting, a site-responsive work that draws on and incorporates the architecture of the space, and Art-in-Buildings’ first commissioned art installation in the building.

Chaseling’s spatial paintings play with the audience’s perception of the architecture of their environment through the application of playful lines, bright, abstracted forms, and reflective aluminum sheets. In mutopia 2, swathes of colors cover the walls and ceiling, creating distorted landscapes and biomorphic shapes. The beautiful convergence of the artist’s forms, however, masks the pernicious nature of her subject matter. Chaseling’s abstracted imagery presents a potential “mutopian future,” one impacted by the long-term effects of depleted uranium, an invisible and inexorable environmental contaminant that is a byproduct of nuclear power and nuclear weapons technology. Her forms reference imagined mutated landscapes, plants, and creatures transfigured over generations of exposure to gamma radiation. Interspersed with these abstracted forms, the artist embeds information about depleted uranium production and munitions in the US, an unseen but persistent threat. Chaseling’s work is a neon warning of apocalyptic destruction, radioactive mutation, and environmental decay, but it is also a glowing beacon of hope – hope for a call to action, for a cleaner future, for rebirth, for a path to beauty in darkness’ midst.

Claudia Chaseling is an international artist, born in Munich and living and working in Berlin and Canberra, Australia. Her work has been exhibited in over sixty solo and group exhibitions, notably in the United States, Australia and Europe. She has been featured in the X-Border Biennial, Finland, the Luela Biennial, Sweden and the Lorne Biennial, Australia. Recent projects include solo exhibitions at Wollongong Art Gallery, Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Krohne Art Collection, Yuill Crowely Gallery, Kunstverein Duisburg and at Art-in-Buildings, New York City, among others. Her latest group exhibitions include Momentum, Berlin, Krohne Art Collection, Eifel, Germany and Yuill Crowely Gallery, Sydney.

Major grants and scholarships received include DAAD, Samstag Scholarship, Karl Hofer Prize, Australia Council for the Arts Grant, artsACT Grants, IGNITE Career Fund and Harris&Hobbs Material Award. Claudia has taken part in various visiting artists programs and residencies and is currently undertaking a Vice Chancellors Creative Research Fellowship at the Fenner School, ANU. “Verlag für zeitgenoessische Kunst und Theorie Berlin” published her extensive monograph in 2016 and she completed her studio-based PhD in visual arts this year at the ANU in Canberra.
